3 Tips for Navigating Difficult Emotions

In this moment, how are you feeling?

Even though we often project we're doing "well," things can be more complicated beneath the surface.

That's why I want to ask you again, how are you really feeling?

The truth is, life can be overwhelming sometimes, and in the midst of difficult times, our emotions can get the best of us.

Maybe you’ve lashed out at someone close to you when you meant to say, “I need your support.” Or maybe you’ve uttered the words “I’m fine” when that couldn’t have been further from the truth.

I want to offer you three tips for navigating difficult emotions that I’ve found to be effective.

1. Be honest about your emotions.

When we deny our emotions, we separate ourselves from the truth of what we’re experiencing. If you’re having a difficult emotional experience, be honest first and foremost. Acknowledge what you are experiencing.

Your mantra: "I see you."

2. Be present with your emotions.

Presence is the key to allowing any emotion to move through your body. With loving attention and presence, we can alchemize any emotion. To be present is to notice the bodily sensations that arise within you. For example, fear may manifest as a tightness in your abdomen. Witness these sensations as compassionately as you can.

Your mantra: “I am with you.”

3. Create a sacred space to transform your emotions.

Did you know that emotions are simply “energy in motion”? How lucky are we to be able to witness the energy of the Life Force expressing itself through us? When we relate to our emotions in this way, we can cultivate reverence for them. I invite you to create a sacred space for your emotions—alone or with someone you trust. You might light a candle or set aside adequate time. Be patient and tender with yourself like you would a child.

Your mantra: “I am in awe of you.”
